iWhat exactly is a hospitalist? A hospitalist is a physician who cares for patients while they stay at the hospital as inpatients. Hospitalists have no patient care responsibilities outside the hospital, which enables them to focus exclusively on inpatients. Hospitalist physicians are specialists in Internal Medicine and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
While the patient is hospitalized, the hospitalist will perform examinations, order lab and radiology tests, do procedures and administer other kinds of treatment, according to necessity.
Hospitalists work closely with the patients, referring physician as well, returning the patient to their primary care physician for follow-up after discharge. The patient's primary care physician will receive a summary of the hospital stay so they can pick up outpatient care most efficiently.
