The pulmonary team focuses on the health of the respiratory system, using procedures such as bloodwork, bronchoscopy (a procedure that allows a doctor to look directly at the lungs using a thin, lighted tube), chest X-rays, CT scans, pulmonary function tests including spirometry, and sleep studies. Outpatient pulmonary rehab is designed to help improve the symptoms of chronic (long-term) lung disease. Health care providers guide you through physical activities (based on your tolerance level), education and techniques to help you manage your breathing during everyday activities.
Pulmonary rehabilitation is recommended for patients with lung disease who experience shortness of breath frequently and are not able to perform daily activities despite daily use of medication. This program is optimal for anyone with a diagnosis of COPD or other types of chronic lung disease that limit breathing and performance of normal daily activities.
