National Cancer Survivors Day - June 2
June 2, 2024
We honor those 18 million-plus men and women today, June 2, on National Cancer Survivors Day, a day set aside to recognize their bravery and inspiration and celebrate their very existence. Despite the billions of dollars our nation has poured into cancer research and treatment, the disease remains the second leading cause of death. Surviving cancer is something to rejoice in.
And while we are confident more medical advances are forthcoming in the treatment and detection of cancer, we recommend the rest of you strive to avoid the “survivor” tag altogether. Changes in your lifestyle ‒ such as exercising regularly, improving your diet, and avoiding known carcinogens (substances capable of causing cancer) ‒ can greatly reduce your risk of developing the disease.
Regular screenings for certain cancers can also potentially lead to early detection and are especially important for common and treatable cancers such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. With many cancers, early detection is a lifesaver. To learn more about your risks or to schedule a screening, speak with your primary care physician or find one at Palestine Medical Group here.
Palestine Regional Medical Center offers free health risk assessments to allow you to determine your estimated level or risk for each of the following cancer types. Click on the link to access the assessment.
Congratulations to all who have earned the title of cancer survivor, and to your loved ones and caregivers who have walked with you every step of the way. Palestine Regional Medical Center cherishes its role in helping patients survive cancer and looks forward to helping others beat the disease and live to see their future hopes and dreams come to fruition.
